TRANSMOUNT Project

The “Transformative change as a response to climate change in mountain social-ecological systems” (TRANSMOUNT) project was a synthesis workshop organized with support from the Open Thematic Call of the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) to understand nature-based adaptation to climate change and its potential towards transformative adaptation.

A total of 14 researchers from eight different countries with broad experience in the study of mountain socio-ecosystems and global change participated in the workshop, which had a duration of two complete days and took place in Sopuerta, Basque Country, Spain. The workshop has served to develop a framework to assess the process and the outcomes of transformative change in mountain systems. Regarding the process of transformation towards sustainability the framework includes 12 qualitative variables that belong to the personal, political and practical spheres of transformation. Regarding the outcomes, the framework includes six variables also based on previous literature. This framework was tested in sub-groups using mountain case studies in which participants had worked before, and with the mountain cases of the PANORAMA database of IUCN.
