PORTAL members at the MOPGA conference in Berlin in 2022

Last December, two members of the PORTAL project went to Berlin to attend to the Make Our Planet Great Again (MOPGA) conference that gathered all the laureates of the initiatives led from the Franco-German partnership.

Sandra Lavorel was invited as a guest speaker and highlighted the potential of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for transformative adaptation to climate change, through the assessment framework developed in the PORTAL project (and published in One Earth here). She presented the concept of Nature’s Contribution to Adaptation and the importance of personal values for just and sustainable Nature-based Solutions (NbS).

Titouan Dubo presented the main results of the PORTAL project. First regarding the mismatch of NbS location with where they are the most needed according to the climate hazards they aim to address and the Nature’s Contribution to People they attempted to provide (and published in Reg. Environ. Change here). Secondly, he showed the need for interactions between values, rules and knowledge for shaping decision-making contexts to implement transformative NbS. He presented the on-going work of the PORTAL project that aims to assess the multiple benefits of NbS, to identify the areas where to prioritise the NbS implementation and to develop a regional strategy to upscale NbS.

The conference showcased the benefits from the warm relationship built between the laureates that ensure a bright potential for collaboration in the future.
